A Member of Two Tribes by Emily Bowen Cohen
As a young girl, my unique upbringing seemed unremarkable. In hindsight, my memories gave me pause. The Indians in school divided students up by the color of their skin and made fun of the “honkeys.” My white elementary school principal groused that my dad made too much money. The “Bible Man” visited our school to reward good Christian kids. By the fourth grade, I was just beginning to question where a Jewish Native American girl would fit in to all of this. My questions ended when my father died suddenly. We left Oklahoma, my mother vowing to never return.
