New Book Avoids Pop publicity Surrounding Jewish Mysticism

Madonna practices it. Celebrities are studying it. While is seems that Kabbalah is everywhere these days, the information often available about Kabbalah is more hype than fact.

Finally there is a book that provides an explanation of Kabbalah based on scholarship while remaining accessible to the lay reader.

For many Jews today, Judaism is an ethnic, family oriented experience revolving around food and holidays. The typical synagogue service is often lacking true soul or meaning and thus it is no surprise that many young Jews are searching for spiritual answers elsewhere.

In an effort to provide answers, Rabbi Nissan Dovid Dubov started teaching Kabbalah , Jewish mysticism to young adults. “People pay attention when you mention the word Kabbalah. They are genuinely fascinated by its lure.” Explains Dubov, who gave lectures on the history, principles and practical application of the inner wisdom known as Kabbalah.

Inward Bound: A Guide to Understanding Kabbalah (Devora Publishing) is a product of the research done for those lectures and their adaptation for the audience which was composed primarily of highly secular and educated traditional Jews.

The book is divided into three sections:

  1. The first section examines the very origins of this esoteric knowledge including the meaning and purpose of the Zohar, the role of Kabbalah in our understanding of the Messiah, and guides us towards an understanding of how Kabbalah is intrinsically linked to the future destiny of the Jewish people.
  2. The second section of the book provides the reader with an in-depth explanation of fundamental Kabbalistic concepts. It explains how God created something from nothing – an enlightening description of the emergence of a physical creation from ethereal Godliness.
  3. The third section brings heaven down to earth by illustrating how the principles of Kabbalah can be applied to our daily lives, including the practice of Jewish meditation, achieving repentance, and refining one’s character.

The book opens with a section entitled Key FAQS with helpful questions and answers about the basics of Kabbalah as well as a historical timeline which provides information on important dates and figures relevant to Kabbalah. A glossary is provided as well as a section entitled Useful Links provides a bibliography of online and printed resources.
