The Passion of Life: Escaping the Holocaust by Helene J. RW. Wald

I was born in France in 1930, to parents who had emigrated from Poland in 1929.My father pushed my mother to leave Poland because he thought there was no future for them there, due to the anti-Semitic conditions in the country. They had to work very hard just to make a living. Just as things were getting better for them, the war started. My father volunteered to go to the Foreign Legion to fight, because he was still not a French citizen. Meanwhile my mother was left alone with me and my new little sister, who was born in December 1939. Thank G-d, due to my mother’s “golden hands” she was able to support the family as a seamstress. My mother’s sister, whose husband became a prisoner of war in Germany, was living with us. My aunt was a big help to us, allowing my mother to earn a living. This is the story of me and my family before, during and after the war in France. Life was dangerous each day because of the resistance of some French people, who did not accept the occupation.
